REVOLTING DISPLAY OF SINEWS
Simply
watch the animation of Jane Fonda’s aerobics workout video while the
couch does the exercises for you - moving every part of your body in
time with Jane and her celebrity team. This educational simulator shows
the dangers of exercise, with everyone, including Osama Bin Laden and
Madonna, disintegrating
through over-exertion in the finale.

This simulator
is built round a Shapemaster electric toning table that was originally in the pier
gym. When the gym closed, I got the table. There are 6 movements –
head tilt, arms rest lift, back wobble, buttock gyrate, leg kick and
whole body shake. The movements have been extensively modified, mainly
to increase their speed and decrease their travel. Decreasing the amount
of movement made it safer - the finished machine was shown to an
osteopath who passed it as completely harmless. It also made possible to
cover the entire bed in funfur to disguise the individual moving pads. |

The
animation is based on a real Jane Fonda workout video. I made a model of
the gym with Patrick Bond. The celebrities are made up of photos from
the internet cut out and stuck together with wire and hot glue. I filmed
it with Ben Waters who then composed the cheesy 80s music.
Installed
on the pier, this machine has been much more popular than I was
expecting – I thought people would feel to embarrassed to lie on it
with everyone else watching, but they seem to have few inhibitions. This
is partly because of the pier – people almost expect to do daft things
they wouldn’t normally do on a pier. Its also partly because more
people have got the idea of the arcade (the first year many people
seemed suspicious of it all). |
