INSTANT ECLIPSE
1999

This started as a joke – just a dark shed to simulate the total eclipse – but it got more elaborate. Will encouraged me to add stars and Sarah Angliss produced a wonderful soundtrack.

In its original form (see opening ceremony, bottom right) the door was normally closed and you had to put the money in before it would open. But no-one dared to use it so I rebuilt it with double doors, normally open.
Now on Southwold pier, people are still a bit reluctant to shut themselves inside – but its worth it! Surprisingly delicate and atmospheric, much more subtle than my normal creations.

THE OPENING CEREMONY
Passers by were so reluctant to try it that my father stood beside it, offering people 20p pieces to have a free go!
