ARCHIMEDES 
(made in collaboration with Greville White for the entrance of Eureka children's museum, Halifax,   1991)

Archimedes is made of copper from old hot water cylinders

An initial experiment. Archimedes is filled with foam and is pulled down into the bath. We hoped the buoyancy would be enough to make him spring out dramatically but it wasn’t, so we added a pneumatic ram to assist.

Archimedes slowly lowers into the bath, filled to the brim. The water overflows into a large measuring cylinder. He then springs out of the bath, sploshing water onto the canopy below.

An archimedes screw pumps the water up to the bath again.
