FURNITURE  3
I gradually made more mechanical things, and less furniture.
These were some of the last pieces I made.

BLOCK OF FLATS DRAWERS
1980
This is a terrible photo but the actual thing is interesting. I drew scenes in all the windows before varnishing it.

MEDIEVAL CHEST,  1982
By this time I had started playing with steel. Locks are quite easy to make, I'm surprised more craftsmen don't handmake them, particularly because a large lock feels so good to turn. I made this for my sister, who was living in Brixton at the time and kept being burgled. The handle on the side conceals a secret compartment for storing cash. The handle on the other side conceals a microswitch. Unless the handle is raised, a small explosive charge is ignited inside the lock when the key is turned, to scare any potential burglar.  medieval chest.jpg (17103 bytes)

MAGIC TABLE,  1980
Only alternate drawers on this table open. The intermediate drawers operate mechanisms inside the table:

One handle rings a gong
One handle opens a real drawer on the other side of the table.
One handle makes feather flowers pop out of the middle of the table.
One handle does nothing (I ran out of time)

UNFINISHED TABLE,  1987
I made this table for my parents. The top is made up of many planks biscuited together - and they all split apart in my parent's warm dining room and had to be re-planed, glued and finished.  This is the problem working with a living material like wood. I now tend to use plywood.

KITCHEN CUPBOARD
1983
I modelled the figure in wax and took it to a local foundary that usually casts ship propellors. It was a wonderful place.
