FURNITURE 2
When I moved to the country in 1976, I tried growing vegetables and catching rabbits with lurcher dogs. It didn't last long, I soon went back to buying all my food in shops. What was good was having my own workshop for the first time. When not doing my cartoon strip I energetically made furniture.

COW TABLE, 1977 I was delighted to find that I could buy great lumps of tree in Suffolk, so I made a few traditional tables. Tables are more satisfying to make than most furniture. They don't have too many joints and involve working with solid chunks of wood, and then they often get used intensively. I saw this table again about twenty years after I'd made it. A huge crack had opened in the top but it looked wonderful, almost black with years of polish and use.

		REMOVAL MEN BED, 1979 I made this as a present for Ellie, aged 3. I ran out of time to make anything at the foot of the bed so it has rested on beer crates ever since.

TEMPLE KITCHEN UNIT, 1980
I soon got bored with traditional furniture and started trying visual puns - making furniture look like things that were roughly the same shape. So a kitchen unit is roughly the same shape as the front of a temple, and a standard lamp is roughly the same as a telegraph pole.
