INSTITUTE OF
CONTEMPORARY ARTS
COLLECTING BOX 1980
The director had jokingly suggested that I make them a collecting box at a party and was
rather surprised when I turned up with it, several months later. However, it stayed in
place for over ten years. It also persuaded the ICA to let me have a small exhibition of
my coin operated machines in 1981 - though I never felt I fitted in with their vision of
contemporary art.

It reappeared in 2006, for sale on a
Spitalfields market stall.
I've been told the ICA were embarrassed as they'd never sold it, but they
haven't taken any action so I guess its 'finders keepers'.
