SMALL CARVINGS
A few years ago I didn't know what to give my mum for Christmas so I
carved her a small birdwatcher figure to sit on her
windowsill where she looks out at the birds in the garden. This got me
back into carving so I now make them as presents for people I know. Each
figure takes about a day to make, and I enjoy thinking about the person
while I work.

I first carved
presents in the 1970s, when I was making a
living from my cartoon strip - wanting excuses to make things. . |

HOMAGE TO MARIO MARINI, 1977
I'd liked the few bits I'd seen as a child in the Tate, but his stuff in Milan
really made me a fan, though he was a 1930s fascist so its probably un PC to like his
work.
