BURGLAR CATCHING MACHINE   1965

This is the earliest record I have of anything I've made. I was 14 at the time. She was situated on a ledge above the stairs to my bedroom. A pressure sensitive switch on one step of the stairs set her going. The right hand arm slowly rises while the finger moves back and forth beckoning. To increase the attraction her breasts whizz round. Having lured the burglar to her, she then hits him on the head with her left arm.

She was always breaking down - the glues wouldn't stick well enough and the batteries kept going flat. I think the painful memories of this are why I now get such satisfaction in making things that do just about work. People are so used to cars and other mass-produced gadgets that are very reliable that they don't appreciate how difficult it is to make one-off contraptions. These can never have the same extensive development as mass produced goods.
